What comes AFTER the Apple Tablet; Light Blue Optics projects touch surface future
December 3, 2010 | In: Touch
You’ll soon see Apple‘s new tablet or iPad. It will be fantastic, to be sure, but what will come next? Well, how about a touch screen that can work on any surface? Light Blue Optics’ CTO, Dr. Adrian Cable, and co-founder came to my house yesterday to show it to me and talk about what this projector and touch surface computer can do. It is remarkable and you need to see it demoed to understand that it is what comes next. More at lightblueoptics.com

Nice. I want this for artistic functions.
Looks like a great sketching tool once they get a decent art painting, drawing, etc interface.

@lindsayinpink I think smart borad needs to use its board as the screen while the light touch can project on any paper. It is actually even cooler lol

In that case, I’d imagine there’d be some sort of algorithm that tracks the position of the occluded finger before and after it “disappears” (the farthest finger should appear darker to the photodetector) and thus infer the motion vector.

@PacoBell
Imagine you are drawing a circle with your mutlitouch setup. you put your index finger at the center of the circle and with ur middle finger you trace out the outer edge. At some point, the tips of your fingers and the IR source will be co-linear. That is you can draw a straight line through where the index finger and middle finger touch the table and the light source. This will obviously cause one of the fingers to cast a shadow on the other.
That’s not quite what i meant

You’re the “dumb fuck” if you believe everything that comes out of a marketer’s mouth. You do realize that Scoble had to turn the ambient lights off in this video to get a decent image, right? Doesn’t sound all that bright or usable to me.

What is the use case for superimposing one finger on top of another? That just sounds awkward.

I’m thinking a OLED screen with touchscreen capabilities would the next step because it’s thin and very flexible. Light blue optics would be great if it wasn’t for the fact that certain lighting conditions have to be met in order to see good quality images and videos. Also seeing my shadow block some of the images (such as a keyboard) would bother me to no end.

The IR fan is very clever…I just don’t understand how this can be fully multi-touch and still detect when 2 fingers are co-linear with the IR source. The finger closer to the IR source would cast a shadow on the 2nd finger…so no scatter there….how did u guys get over this problem..

So, please, Dr. Adrian, so stop saying ‘so’ at the beginning of each answer? And Absolutely, stop with the absolutely, too! Oh, yeah, cool product- can’t wait to order drinks with it without getting off my fat ass to go to the bar….
